Canada’s first and only research hub dedicated to developing, testing and validating personal protective equipment (PPE) has received a $1.2M grant from the Ontario Together Fund.
This funding will support McMaster’s new Centre of Excellence in Protective Equipment and Materials (CEPEM) in making the next generation of PPE by expanding its infrastructure, testing equipment and partnerships with companies to advance Canadian-Made PPE. CEPEM opened in March 2020 after Hamilton Health Sciences raised the alarm over an anticipated supply-chain breakdown due to Covid-19. Together with local manufacturers, Whitebird and Niko Apparel Systems, the combined effort produces 20,000 face shields and 20,000 face masks a day for front-line workers. This investment will bridge the gap between design and production phases, and get protective equipment into the market faster.
