ArcelorMittal Dofasco celebrated their $1.8 B project marking their commitment and progress towards decarbonization at the official groundbreaking ceremony in Hamilton on October 13th, 2022. ArcelorMittal Dofasco is planning to build a 2.5 million tonne direct reduced iron furnace and 2.4 million tonne electric arc furnace in Hamilton. This initiative will reduce approximately 60% of emissions and transform the way steelmaking has been done for generations. The transition process to electric is set to be complete in 2028 and will create as many as 2,500 jobs during the construction phase. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was in Hamilton for the groundbreaking and emphasized that the $400 million investment from the federal government will help ArcelorMittal Dofasco become the first major steel company to move toward a greener steelmaking process on a global scale. The province of Ontario also contributed $500 million to the initiative, which intends to reduce emissions by up to 3 million tonnes per year by 2030. At the groundbreaking event, participants celebrated the ‘historic moment’ for the company which will further establish Hamilton as a leader in steelmaking and help Canada in taking significant strides towards net zero milestones.
