Goods Movement IN HAMILTON

Did you know Hamilton is only one of a handful of Canadian municipalities that have all four modes of transportation within its municipal borders (road/rail/air/port) and is widely known as a true intermodal city?

As the focus on e-commerce and the efficient movement of goods has gained greater prominence over the past 25 years (particularly during the COVID-19 global pandemic), effective and efficient infrastructure is critical for business success. Hamilton is at the forefront of this effort in Canada. The great number of transportation options, the connections to some of the largest markets in the world, and the capacity to receive large shipment of goods makes Hamilton one of the strongest communities in the nation in the area of goods movement. In recent years, Hamilton has benefitted and will benefit from major investments from Amazon, DHL, Cargojet and KFAerospace.

If you have a Goods Movement investment and are looking for help from Hamilton’s Economic Development Office to start an operation, expand a facility, and/or find new markets contact us!

Hamilton is at the heart of Canada’s economic engine and is centrally located within an hour’s drive of Toronto and the US border– providing its companies with quick access to 460 million consumers in North America and beyond.  Hamilton also has one of the lowest rates of traffic congestion in the Greater Toronto/Hamilton Area (GTHA).

Hamilton is a recognized leader in air cargo.  The John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport handles various products along every sector from consumer goods to automotive, livestock, aerospace, pharma, agriculture and more.

Being Canada’s busiest overnight express cargo airport, operating unrestricted, 24/7 with Canada Customs onsite, Hamilton is able to deliver on time and in multiple ways.  Boasting 2 runways at 10,0000 feet and 6,000 feet, no cargo delivery is too big or too small for Hamilton.

Hamilton is also home to two (2) Class 1 Railways: Canadian Pacific and Canadian National Railway, enjoys direct connections to 400-series highways, has two major expressways running through the city (with direct connectivity to the greater provincial highway systems- 400 series, Queen Elizabeth Way and Highway 6) and offers properties with intermodal/transload facilities and direct rail-to-port capabilities.

Hamilton is home to the busiest port in Ontario and of the Canadian Great Lakes.  The recent merger with the Oshawa Port Authority solidifies Hamilton’s position as a leader in maritime cargo operations.  The Hamilton Oshawa Port Authority (HOPA) provides many benefits including, multimodal options with direct rail access and is a key element to supply chains including steel, agri-food, bulk project, manufacturing and construction material.  The port also provides onsite Canada Customs to accommodate import and export of product.
