From Steel City to Food Hub: How Hamilton is Building One of Canada’s Most Important Agri-Food Economies

Hamilton’s agri-food and food and beverage processing sector has grown significantly over the past decade, driven by strategic investments in port and logistics infrastructure and targeted economic development efforts. The Port of Hamilton has seen agri-food cargo rise from about 9% to 40% of total volume, alongside major new developments including a sugar refinery, rail transload facility, expanded flour milling operations, and a large-scale acid production plant—highlighting the city’s strengthening role as a food processing and logistics hub.
