A new early-stage life sciences venture fund announced by McMaster University, the University of Toronto and Genesys Capital is welcome news for Ontario’s innovation economy.
The Genesys University Seed Fund is designed to support university-affiliated life sciences startups as they move from research and discovery toward commercialization, helping more companies access early-stage capital and grow in Ontario. The fund has reached a first close of more than $30 million in commitments, with support from McMaster, U of T, the Temerty Group, Venture Ontario and RBC.
For Hamilton, the announcement is especially meaningful because of McMaster University’s role in the partnership and its long-standing contributions to research, entrepreneurship and health innovation. McMaster’s connections to clinical, research and commercialization networks continue to be an important part of Hamilton’s broader economic and innovation landscape.
More broadly, this fund reflects the strength of Ontario’s life sciences sector and the importance of supporting companies at the earliest stages of growth. By helping promising startups remain and scale in Ontario, the initiative has the potential to support health innovation, talent retention and economic development across the province.
