Trade and Tariffs

On September 8, 2026, Canada officially enacted a suite of counter-tariffs in direct response to the United States’ Section 338 levies.

For local importers and manufacturers, the immediate hits include:

  • 50% import levy on numerous American milk and cream products.
  • 25% import levy on various U.S. cheese and softwood products.
  • Additional duties spanning personal care items, electronics, household goods, tools, recreational goods, apparel, office supplies, metals, and building materials. (A complete list of impacted products is available through the Government of Canada).

Relief is Possible: This situation is highly fluid. If these new duties are squeezing your operations, you may be eligible to apply to the federal Department of Finance for tariff remission. Your business can qualify under two circumstances:

  • The goods you use as inputs cannot be reasonably sourced domestically or from non-U.S. markets.
  • The counter-tariffs present exceptional circumstances that will severely and adversely impact the Canadian economy.

The United States’ Response to Counter-Tariffs

Late in the afternoon on September 9, 2026, the U.S. escalated the trade dispute through a series of executive orders and proclamations. The response brings harsh new realities for Canadian exporters, including barring Canadian companies from bidding on U.S. government contracts.

Outright Import Bans:
The U.S. has halted the sale of select Canadian goods entirely.

Expanded 50% Import Tariffs:
Expected to roll out over the coming weeks, the U.S. has expanded its 50% duties under Section 338 to cover a massive swath of Canadian industries:
