Home News & Resources Invest in Hamilton March 2026 Newsletter
Welcome to March 2026’s Invest in Hamilton Newsletter.
I’d like to begin with a word of congratulations to our colleagues on the Tourism and Culture team, who helped make JUNOS Week and the JUNO Awards a true celebration of Hamilton’s vibrant music and creative landscape. Hamiltonians have long known that our city is one of Ontario’s foremost culture hubs, and after a week of performances, including the live broadcast JUNO Awards at TD Coliseum, I think it is fair to say that the rest of the country is now in on the secret.
Whenever Hamilton hosts an event of the JUNOS’ magnitude, there is always a strong economic uplift that ripples across the Downtown and the city as a whole. Over the coming months, staff in the Economic Development Office will be working to offer some quantitative measures of that impact. Watch this space for updates.
March also saw other exciting developments in Hamilton’s business parks, with expansions and acquisitions in the Ancaster Business Park and Red Hill Business Park. Despite the ongoing challenges of Canada’s changing international trade relationships, these investments are tangible examples of meaningful growth and investor confidence in Hamilton.
April will see the start of our facilitated business consultations on the 2026-2030 Economic Development Action Plan. Engaging with businesses of all sizes and industries is a fundamental component of this plan. For companies that may wish to contribute to this new plan but don’t have time to attend a consultation, we welcome you to complete this online consultation form. The form is completely anonymous, and all data will be held in the strictest confidence.
As staff build our roadmap for the future, the Hamilton Business Centre, Hamilton’s Small Business Enterprise Centre, has launched a new program in partnership with the Hamilton Farmers’ Market to support entrepreneurs in the present. This initiative, along with our Summer Company Program, creates opportunities for youth entrepreneurs to gain invaluable training and mentorship.
As is always the case, my team is available to help you navigate the ever-changing nature of the times. Please feel free to connect with any of us through Economic Development’s website: investinhamilton.ca.

March's Trade and Tariff Update
Over the last month, the international trade and tariff situation has largely been overshadowed by conflict in the Middle East. As noted in the previous newsletter, the United States Supreme Court ruling on “reciprocal tariffs” was quickly replaced by a new tranche of tariffs issued under Section 122 of the United States Trade Act. Through CUSMA, Canada has remained largely insulated from these new tariffs.
At the time of this newsletter, the following tariffs are in place on Canadian goods entering the United States:
- Steel and Aluminum: 50.0%
- Passenger vehicles, trucks, and auto parts: 25.0%
- Softwood lumber: 35.2%
- Copper: 50%
- Upholstered furniture, kitchen cabinets, vanities: 25.0%
- Buses: 10.0%
- Non-CUSMA compliant exports: 10.0%
On March 20, 2026, the Government of Canada extended a number of Employment Insurance measures that were set to expire in April 2026. These measures waived the one-week waiting period for claims, suspended rules that required Employment Insurance recipients to expend severance payments before collecting benefits, and added 20 weeks of benefits for long-tenured workers.
This news followed an announcement earlier in March that the Province of Ontario and the Government of Canada had partnered to deliver $228.8 million over three years to support workers directly impacted in the lumber, steel, and automotive sectors through the Canada-Ontario Workforce Tariff Response. This funding will be integrated into Ontario’s existing employment services network.
Local businesses seeking support for tariff impacts can review current provincial and federal programs at investinhamilton.ca’s tariff hub.
Celebrating EVM Group's Expansion
The EVM Group is on the grow. Only two years after moving into their new location in the Red Hill Business Park, the company is making a 13,000 square foot addition to their building. This expansion nearly doubles the size of EVM Group’s footprint in Hamilton.
In a post on LinkedIn, company CEO Adam McCormick quoted Field of Dreams, saying, “If you build it they will come.” EVM Group specializes in automation process design, assembly systems, and project management.
They are part of the comprehensive manufacturing value chain that makes Hamilton an ideal place for investment even in challenging economic times.
Welcoming Niagara College to Hamilton
Hamilton is honoured to host Niagara College Canada’s new academic upgrading site in Downtown Hamilton.
Situated in the Goodwill Building at 225 King William Street, the site will offer programming to support literacy and basic skills development. This will create new pathways to post-secondary training and long-term employment for Hamiltonians.
This site is part of a growing skills development and training hub that is emerging on King William. The academic upgrading centre is within walking distance of the John Howard Society, Fedcap Canada, and Community Living.
Programming at the academic upgrading site is expected to launch in August.
Recapping the Connect to Career Job Fair
On March 3, 2026, more than 2,300 job seekers and more than 40 local employers gathered in Downtown Hamilton for the Connect to Careers Job Fair. Connect to Careers is Hamilton’s largest job fair, and Hamilton’s Economic Development Office is a proud sponsor of this event.
Members of Economic Development’s Global Hamilton team, the Hamilton Immigration Partnership Council, the Hamilton Business Centre, as well as the City of Hamilton’s Human Resources team helped share information on the latest programs, entrepreneurship opportunities, and summer employment positions with the City of Hamilton.
As part of the Economic Development Office’s work to support and retain international students following graduation, the Global Hamilton team used the Job Fair to meet prospective mentors for a new graduate mentorship program. Mentors will meet with graduates in four flexible, 1-hour sessions to:
- Share industry insights and Canadian workplace expectations
- Offer guidance, encouragement, and constructive feedback
- Help graduates understand career pathways in your sector
The pilot program is expected to launch in May 2026.
There are still limited spaces available for community leaders seeking to offer their time as mentors in the first program cohort.
Contact Stefa Sokolowski, Global Hamilton Officer, for more details.
Call for Vendors: Hamilton Newcomer Day 2026
Hamilton Newcomer Day is returning this year—and we’re inviting local organizations, community groups, and businesses to participate as vendors.
Newcomer Day is a city‑wide celebration welcoming immigrants, refugees, international students, and all newcomers who have recently made Hamilton their home. The event brings together settlement services, employers, educational institutions, cultural groups, and local entrepreneurs to help newcomers build connections and discover the resources available to them.
- We are currently seeking vendors who can offer:
- Settlement and community supports
- Employment and training opportunities
- Health, education, and family services
- Cultural programming or community engagement
- Products or services that support newcomer integration
Participating as a vendor is a valuable opportunity to share information, meet residents, and help shape an inclusive, welcoming Hamilton.
Introducing Hamilton's Community Market Accelerator
The Hamilton Business Centre’s Community Market Accelerator is a pilot program designed to help prepare young entrepreneurs for entry into the broader marketplace. The program will offer early-stage founders hands-on training, expert mentorship, and live market experience.
Participants will:
- Sell their handmade products at the Hamilton Farmers’ Market during the Market’s regular operating days
- Receive one-on-one coaching on pricing, compliance, and sales
- Test and refine their products based on real customer feedback
- Access local business networks to build meaningful connections with fellow entrepreneurs
The program is open to youth aged 15 to 29. Participation offers the perfect blend of training and implementation that will empower participants with the confidence to launch, grow, and succeed.
Welcoming INTE Modular to Hamilton
Hamilton is proud to welcome INTE Modular to the Ancaster Business Park.
INTE Modular is a technology-driven prefabricated construction manufacturer that specializes in steel volumetric modular and panelized building systems. This means that INTE Modular fabricates 80%-90% of a building project’s materials in-house and then ships each module to a building site for construction. Compared to other construction methods, this approach can accelerate construction time between 25% and 50%.
Operating in this space transformational space, INTE Modular’s goals are to meet Canada’s growing demand for housing supply, produce buildings that catalyze manufacturing scale-up, and support institutional and community infrastructure projects.
