Late Tuesday evening, the United States government announced a three-day pause on the planned 50% tariffs targeting select Canadian goods under Section 338 of the U.S. Tariff Act of 1930.

This delay is not a final settlement of the ongoing trade dispute, but rather a brief extension to facilitate further negotiations. In a recent statement, Prime Minister Mark Carney noted, “Substantial progress has been made, although there is important work still to be done.”

At the time of this update, there is no clear indication whether the current talks include discussions on loosening the existing tariffs imposed under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962. To date, those measures have impacted:

• Steel, aluminum, and copper articles and derivatives
• Passenger vehicles, light trucks, and certain automotive parts
• Medium- and heavy-duty vehicles and parts
• Wood products
• Semiconductor articles
• Patented pharmaceutical articles

The Hamilton Economic Development Office will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as negotiations proceed.
