Stelco employees impacted by lay-offs are being supported through the Protect Ontario Workers Employment Response (POWER) Centres program. The POWER Centre supporting Stelco workers is located at 1031 Barton Street East in Hamilton, and is operated by the United Steelworkers union.
This POWER Centre is providing drop-in service to impacted employees, and can also be reached by phone at 905-548-9197.
The Government of Ontario provides extensive job search, apprenticeship, and training support through Employment Ontario. Information on additional provincial services, including Ontario Works, which provides support for individuals who do not qualify for Employment Insurance, the Ontario Disability Support Program, and the Ontario Student Assistance Program can be found through the link below.
The Government of Canada delivers the Employment Insurance program, which offers extended coverage for long-tenured workers who have lost employment. The Government of Canada also hosts a national job bank to support job searches, provides training and skill development for Indigenous people, and hosts a central “training finder” to help Canadians gain in-demand skills from recognized Canadian institutions.
